The gallery was founded in 1981 and is dedicated to Contemporary Art only. German artists
of the middle and younger generation are the main focus. Since 1992 the program has
been expanded to include the Austrian artists Ilse Haider, Gerlinde Helm, Ulrike Lienbacher,
Josef Schwaiger and Uta Belina Waeger, the Russian artist George Pusenkoff, The US
Mel Ramos, the British Julian Opie and as well as Swiss artist Valentin PH Hauri.

The gallery acts as parent-gallery for this fixed group of artists, attending to their studio
organisation as well as the planning, coordinating and executing exhibitions, catalogues,
fairs etc. The works of the represented artists deal principally - on the basis of a conceptual
background - with various new forms of artistic expression in objects, installations, paintings,
photography and drawings.

The artists´ most common focus can basically be expressed with the headings space, color
and light, seen both individually and in their interaction. With regard to content, the pieces
in their mysterious nature seem inaccesible at first glance; the final statement, structure
and profundity of the works first open up to the viewer with more intense consideration.

Starting the gallery the intensive dialogue with YOUNG ART has also been accompanied by
observing and following the work process of already settled artists. Along these lines, the
gallery has also represented Joseph BEUYS, Arnulf RAINER, Markus LÜPERTZ,
A.R. PENCK, Oskar Holweck, Johannes Schreiter, Jan Voss and
Franz Erhardt WALTHER for several years.

The gallery concept includes seven gallery exhibitions (mostly one-artist-shows) each year.
Several catalogues are usually made per year.
The participation in international art fairs

  KUNST ZÜRICH, ART BODENSEE, KUNST WIEN, KIAF SEOUL, TIAF TORONTO,
  ART MIAMI, ART BEJING, SHANGHAI CONTEMPORARY, art.fair 21 COLOGNE -
guarantees widespread presence of the gallery and the represented artists.

The gallery helps not only in building up private art collections, but also designs art
concepts for companies and public institutions, hereby using the various contacts
which have been developed over several years to fulfill collectors´ specific needs.
ERHARD WITZEL GALLERY is also initiating solo exhibitions in museums for its artists.
